Sufi Celebration:
Unfolding the “I”

On Sunday, November 16, 2008, the MTO Sufi Association at UC Berkeley hosted a Sufi Celebration entitled Unfolding the “I”. The program provided a glimpse into Sufism and the significance of the “I” in the teachings of Professor Nader Angha, the renowned 42nd master of the M.T.O. Shahmaghsoudi, School of Islamic Sufism. It described how the discovery of the “I” will bring certainty, peace and tranquility to one’s life. Zikr was introduced as way of connecting to the “I” and discovering one’s infinite origin. The Zikr presentation included audience participation in Zikr as well as a demonstration of the circle of Zikr by the MTO Sufi Zikr Group. Participants learned about Tamarkoz, or Sufi Meditation, which not only brings about well being but is also the tool for gaining self knowledge and self discovery. The Tamarkoz presentation, lead the audience through guided meditation and relaxation.
In addition, the program touched upon the magnificence of Sufi arts, crafts and architecture as creative expressions of the “I”. The evening was filled with music, song and Sufi poetry. The MTO Daf Group, gave a powerful Daf performance. The MTO Sufi Zikr group performed moving Zikr performances which filled the venue with love and enchantment.
