Interfaith Week

UC Berkeley

MTO SA hosted an Open House at the Berkeley Khanegha. The evening was filled with such inspiration and originality. We had Tamarkoz®, watched a lecture by our Teacher, Hazrat Salaheddin Ali Nader Angha Pir Oveyssi, poetry-reading with live music, a student-led introduction and practice of Zikr, and discussion over dinner. We had such a great opportunity to share our beliefs and practices with the campus community and engage in great dialogue and discussion about Islamic Sufism. It was truly the perfect way to help start Interfaith Week.

Dr. Jilla Behnam of MTO SA was asked to represent Islam on an Interfaith Panel Discussion that included many faith leaders from the community representing the Christian, Jewish, Sikh, and Catholic faiths. This was such a wonderful and education experience for everyone. The topic of the Panel Discussion was Crisis and it was eye-opening to hear the similarities and differences across the many faiths.

The heart of Interfaith Week is truly the Interfaith Fair. All of the different student-led faith groups join and table together in the spirit of creating bridges and breaking down boundaries between faith groups by educating ourselves about the different faiths. We had such a tremendous time going from table to table and learning first hand what each religion is about. We also learned a great deal from being able to share our religion of Islam with everyone. The Interfaith Fair is filled with so much love and open-mindedness amidst such great diversity; we as students are setting a standard for peace in such events.

Another gem of Interfaith Week was the Interfaith Devotional Prayer. Members of different faith groups on campus joined hands to pray together and celebrate the diversity of every path of worship and the underlying unity of every faith. The evening included a Hindu Prayer, Unitarian Universalist Prayer, Zoroastrian Chant, Sikh Prayer, Unificationist Prayer, Christian Prayer, Jewish Prayer, Buddhist Chant, and of course MTO SA presented a Muslim Prayer in the form of Zikr. It was so wonderful to see and hear so many of the beautiful ways we all call to God. There was such a feeling of unity and singularity in the room, everyone was praying with such love and enjoying praying in ways they normally would not.

During the last day of Interfaith Week we attended the Muslim Student Association’s Open Friday Prayer and went to lunch with them afterwards. The spirit of Interfaith Week permeated the air while so many different paths of Islam gathered, united as Muslims, to Pray to Allah. MTO SA hosted a complimentary Tamarkoz® class for Interfaith Week. It felt wonderful to center ourselves again and return home to our heart after such an amazing and busy week. After Tamarkoz® class we went to the Jewish Student Association’s Shabbot Prayer and dinner. It was such a brilliant evening; we were able to experience the traditional Prayers and learn the meaning behind them, as well as break bread together and thank God for such a wonderful week of love, unity, and learning!
