Zikr

The word “Zikr” literally means remembrance. There are about 46 verses in the holy Qur’an in which the word “Zikr” is directly used.

“Remember me, and I shall remember you”

Holy Qur’an, 2:152

Sufi Zikr, the remembrance of the Beloved, reunites us with the “I”, our infinite origin, the source of life in the heart. The essence of Zikr or Sufi chanting is being in constant remembrance of the Beloved and ultimately being in harmony and unity with God.

Zikr is usually done in groups. We gather and sit on the floor in a cross-legged position. We focus all our attention and energy toward our heart and connect to the “I.” Then a sacred word or phrase, in remembrance of the Beloved, is repeated in varying melodic tones. As we sing, we move our bodies from left to right and right to left forming the scientific figure of infinity. We start the movement from the “I”, which resides in the heart, and in each movement we pass through the “I.”
